GLOBAL TRENDS – WHERE ARE U?
The prevalence of nutritional deficiencies of a few essential vitamins primarily in their sub-clinical form is reported to be quite high and is not limited to developing countries. Some deficiencies are prevalent in industrialized countries, including US, Canada and EUROPE.
Modern lifestyles and current diet trends, account for inadequate animal food sources (such as meat, egg, fish and dairy) in lactating women’s diet, leading to lower than recommended daily intakes of vitamin B12 , B6, A. Risk of a deficiency is not limited to those following strict vegetarian or vegan diets, but is also apparent in women whose intake of meat is low.
Vitamin B-12 and B6 deficiency and predominantly subclinical deficiency (marginal status) are common in the population, and even higher in women at fertility age .
Low nutrient consumption. Inadequate consumption of some key vitamins, when related to with current recommendations for lactating women, are noted. The busy and demanding nature of lactating mothers’ lifestyle in the modern society might be an explanation to that.
According to the National Academy of Press, the B12 in mother's milk is more affected by current maternal B12 intake rather than mother's vitamin B12 liver stores.
